The class will engage in a comparison of Eastern and Western traditions in sheet forming as a cue toward individual, custom production. We’ll convene to investigate fiber type, preparation, color, texture and shape with an eye toward additional possibilities of pulp painted statements in the medium. A range of methods, tools and equipment will be shown, as we move forward to optimize particular qualities of our pieces in resolved statements. Available for participants at all levels, the class will demand an openness to experimentation, an interest in the physical craft, and the willingness to perhaps get a little wet! The goal: master what we utilize to realize our personal vision in the paper. We’ll take away new perceptions and forge new relationships with our own and others’ works. We’ll “Get it on paper!”

Peter Sowiski received a BA in Studio Art from Oberlin College, and an MFA in Printmaking from Ohio State University. He first exhibited in 1971 and has since shown in over 180 various regional, national and international group and solo exhibitions. He has held over 80 workshop, lecture and visiting artist posts locally and internationally. Peter is an Emeritus Professor of Fine Arts at Buffalo State College, where he taught from 1974- 2007. He has also investigated papermaking in Korea, China, and Vietnam, and was a visiting Professor in Costa Rica and Jamaica.
