Artist Teacher: Karen Hanmer

Day & Date: Wednesday, November 8, 2023

Times: Pacific time, 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m., with classroom doors open at 8:45 AM

Venue: SDBA Zoom, with recording access to registrants for 30 days following class

Skill Level: This is a fast-paced, intermediate-level workshop. Students should be making books regularly and independently, outside a workshop setting. Familiarity with the sewn boards binding is helpful. New binders ready for their next challenge are also welcome.

Class Description: This variation on the Sewn Boards Binding is based on a model by Gary Frost in the University of Iowa Library. Before sewing, a long strip of card is hinged around the one of the card folios that start and end the book. The stub faces out. After sewing, the card strip is folded around the fore edge of the card folio it is hinged around, across the spine of the book, folded again at the fore edge of the second card folio, and rests inside that folio. A spine lining provides support. The structure provides quick, low-adhesive protection for a text that cannot wait for a more formal binding. The wrapper can unfold as a wide panorama, presenting book arts possibilities.

Class Fees: Members only Early Enrollment Plan: $120, Member: $150, Nonmember: $225

Material Fee: None. Registrant provides their own tools and supplies.

EEP Deadline: October 19, 2023

Registration Deadline: October 24, 2023
