This class explores how to use the basic accordion to generate more complex structures by adding folds, cuts and/or inserts. We will begin with the woven book. Then, using the accordion as a spine, we will construct prototypes for three basic structures, the concertina book, the flag book, and the tunnel book. Each participant will choose one of these structures to complete a book with content, the “Six Word Memoir.” All paper will be provided, although students are encouraged to bring any materials they feel they might want to use in the “Six Word Memoir.” This class is geared toward beginning book artists or those who want to review these structures or have an opportunity to create a completed book.

Judith Christensen has taught book arts classes to adults and young students for over twenty years. She has worked with the San Diego Book Arts Education and Outreach Programs, teaching in schools and libraries, and coordinating programs such as “Taking Art to the Neighborhoods,” in which 700 participants made a book, and “Every Child Needs a Voice,” making books with sixty students in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program at Madison High School.
