One of the most modern and architecturally innovative libraries in the country is hosting this year’s exhibition of the work of 28 artist members of SDBA. Forty-five artist’s books showcase the wide range of structure, media, and imagination that characterize the art of the book.

Classic Album With Round Leather Spine
A workshop by Lucía Farías

The main purpose of an album is to contain and preserve images. Students will make a classic album with a round spine, using cloth for the covers and previously pared leather for the spine. The books will have a recess window on the front cover to determine front and back covers. The album will be sewn on Ramieband tapes and it will lay flat when opened. Folded tabs will be used to create volume on the spine's side to prevent the fore edge from being wider than the spine when the pictures are glued in. If time allows there will be a demonstration for paring leather with a Scharf-Fix.
Lucía Farías received her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Universidad de Monterrey in México and has an MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She worked for Jace Graf at Cloverleaf Studio in Austin, Texas. She manages Oveja Verde, her bindery, where she also teaches workshops. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Of the over 200 books submitted for this exhibit, Juror Kitty Maryatt selected 61 pieces by 54 artists. The quality of work was outstanding, which will make for an excellent exhibit, but this made the judging process extremely difficult. Although the show is now closed, you can still order the catalog, below.
Juror: Kitty Maryatt, Assistant Professor of Art at Scripps College and Director of the Scripps College Press, and principal owner of Two Hands Press, a book arts design studio specializing in the design and fabrication of both handmade and production books. Kitty has an MFA from UCLA and lectures and gives workshops all over the country.
